Joint field inventory in Aluksne region and partners’ meeting

On the 19th of September within the framework of the international project «Archaeology, authority, community: cooperation to protect archaeological heritage» project partners from Estonia, Latvia and Russia took part in joint field inventory in Aluksne region. It was continuation of the joint field inventory of archaeological monuments in Pskov and Izborsk regions along the medieval route Pskov – Izborsk – Alūksne that started on 16th of September.

Rescue excavations at the churchyard at Kose

Rescue excavations at the churchyard at Kose were undertaken due to the construction of pipelines in the church. The work was directed by bioarchaeologist Martin Malve. As a result of the field work, the churchyard at Kose is currenly the most thoroughly excavated parish churchyard in northern Estonia. During the field work althogether 120 inhumation burials were unearthed; occasional burnt human bones were also observed. The burials date from Middle and Early Modern Ages.

Excavations on Paloveere hill fort

On May 24-26 small-scale archaeological excavations took place on the hill fort of Paloveere, Võrumaa county, Vastseliina Community. The aim of the works was to study the character, chronology and preservation of the cultural layers on the top of the hill called Liinamägi, The hill top had unfortunately been levelled by bulldozer works and most of the cultural layer had been removed from there and pushed down to the slopes. Joint Estonian-Russian archaeological field inventories Estonia, May 21-23

On May 24-26 joint field inventory of archaeological monuments took place in Estonia. The activity involved Partners 1 (University of Tartu), 7 (Pskov Region Archaeology Centre) and 9 (Pskov Museum), as well as Associate Partner No. 3 (the Institute of History of Material Culture). The works concentrated upon visiting formerly known, mostly state protected sites. May 24 concentrated upon lands north of Lake Peipsi.

Seminar on digitized maps of archaeological monuments in Pskov

On March 10-11 2013 a seminar concerning the databases of archaeological monuments and their GIS application took place in Pskov, at Pskov Region Archaeological Centre. The meeting was organized by Pskov Museum and attended by Pskov Region Archaeological Centre, Pskov archaeological centre, the University of Tartu and the NGO Archaeological Centre (Tallinn).
